What is Ultrasound?
Ultrasound, or diagnostic medical sonography, is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of the internal structures of the body.
These sound waves are emitted by a transducer (probe), which also detects the returning echoes as they bounce off tissues, organs, and fluids. The echo patterns are converted into visual images by a computer.
What is Ultrasound Used for?
-
Used to assess soft tissue structures such as the liver, kidneys, heart, vessels, muscles, and developing fetus.
-
Does not use ionising radiation, making it safe for pregnant patients and children.
-
Can be performed at the bedside (point-of-care) or in outpatient and inpatient settings.
-
Real-time imaging allows assessment of blood flow (Doppler ultrasound), organ movement, & needle guidance during procedures.
