What is Ultrasound?
Ultrasound imaging, also known as diagnostic medical sonography, is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of internal body structures. A handheld transducer emits these sound waves and detects the returning echoes as they reflect off tissues, organs, and fluids. The echoes are processed by a computer to generate visual images.
Clinical Applications & Advantages:
-
Versatile: Commonly used to evaluate soft tissues, including the liver, kidneys, gallbladder, reproductive organs, muscles, blood vessels, and the developing fetus.
-
Safe: Unlike CT or X-ray imaging, ultrasound does not involve ionising radiation, making it particularly safe for pregnant women and children.
-
Real-time assessment: Enables dynamic evaluation of moving structures (e.g., fetal heart activity, blood flow using Doppler) and facilitates image-guided procedures such as biopsies and injections.
-
Accessible: Portable machines allow bedside or point-of-care imaging, enhancing diagnostic capability in hospital wards, emergency departments, outpatient clinics, and community settings.
